Extra Classic
Extra Classic
Extra Classic is a band based out of San Francisco, CA. Recording in their analog studio in San Francisco, lead songwriters, Alex and Adrianne deLanda, formed Extra Classic based on their mutual love of classic Jamaican dub and psychedelic rock and roll. After self-releasing their own 45rpm vinyl singles, the Roots/Psychedelic inspired debut Extra Classic full-length album, “Your Light Like White Lightning, Your Light Like A Laser Beam,” was released by Burger Records in 2012 on cassette (currently sold out). Manimal Vinyl (Los Angeles, CA) released the album on gatefold vinyl LP format.

The Extra Classic live band consists of the following players. Adrianne deLanda (vocals and keyboards; formerly Adrianne Verhoeven) released an album under the name, “Dri,” titled, “Smoke Rings” in 2007. Adrianne was a member of The Anniversary from 1997-2003 (Vagrant Records). Alex deLanda (bass & guitar) is a song writer/producer who has worked with The Papercuts, The Donkeys, and Casiotone for The Painfully Alone, among others. Alex maintains an analog tape recording studio, Nopal Recording, in San Francisco where all Extra Classic songs are produced. Michael Jirkovsky (drums) from Social Studies. Josh Miller (guitar) singer/songwriter of bay-area based band, The Wrong Words (Trouble In Mind) and Outer Embassy. Aaron Deer (keys) was a member of The Impossible Shapes and current player/songwriter in Outer Embassy.

Inspired by their favorite classic Jamaican Dub and Lovers Rock albums, Alex and Adrianne worked to create a “Showcase” LP for the sophomore Extra Classic release. In the traditional “Showcase” format, each song is immediately followed by its corresponding dub/version. In this way, the Extra Classic “Showcase” LP has 6 songs, each followed by a dub/version, for a total of 12 songs on the album. All of the songs from the Extra Classic “Showcase” album were produced with vintage recording equipment and tape machines from the 60s & 70s. The dub/versions of each song on the album highlight various aspects of themes presented in each song with a psychedelic sonic quality. Alex and Adrianne have worked diligently to create new songs with old sounds in a swirling mixture of analog tape splicing, space echo, heavy phase, and classic song-writing themes.

Extra Classic is currently working on recording their third album.
Smokin' Ziggurats
Smokin' Ziggurats
Smokin' Ziggurats was formed from the bond created by guitarists and songwriters Tom Smith and Ben McClintock as they toured as the guitar section of San Francisco band, Social Studies. Their disparate yet harmonious approach to the instrument fueled a new body of work, featuring ping-ponging post-punk guitar leads and twin vocal harmony, and a new band was born.

The eponymous debut record, Smokin' Ziggurats, is the culmination of a year's work of songcraft, brought to life by a pummeling, pocket rhythm section, featuring Thomas Gettys on drums and Chris Sugiura on bass. Phil Manley (Trans Am, Golden, Life Coach) engineered and mixed the album at his San Francisco haven, El Studio. The tightly-honed lyrics, and driving performance of this album lead the band across the country, playing with acts like Metz, Ted Leo, La Luz, Dengue Fever, Magic Trick, and Love of Everything, among others.

Songs kept flowing as the band supported their first record, and Chris Sugiura moved from bass guitar to behind the console for the second, yet-to-be-released album, Face The Jazz. The new 12-song affair finds the band maturing in form and content, scanning the personal and political with smile and a snarl, with their signature guitar voicings and vocal arrangements. Mario Ruiz has taken the helm at bass, his punk and industrial roots from his time as bassist in All Your Sisters adds an edge and feeling that drives home these themes in the live setting.

The band is eager to share the results of their second record, and are currently looking for a label home for the album. The year 2018 will see Smokin' Ziggurats on the road extensively, rippin' it up one raucous and energetic set at a time.
A chance encounter near the peak of Eiger in the Bernese Alps of Switzerland sparked an even less likely musical collaboration that is currently clothed as 'Pilgrims'. New Zealander art-school runaway Cary Furjwürd literally stumbled upon Sky Farquarson - a disowned heir to a Scottish distillery - on a trail up the west flank that nearly led to their death, but instead inspired an otherworldly realization that opened up a new spiritual path forward through music and imagination. In their poetic universe, only the surreal and silly survive.

"We had no business being on that mountain, or making it off alive for that matter. Trekking down from a formidable, unforgiving rock looking like two sticks of taffy made us think about the fragility of life itself. What a precious thing it is, and most of it wasted on making things harder on ourselves, on others. So we decided to devote the rest of our time in these bodies to making life lighter, easier, more like air and water and wind than rock," explains Farquarson. Appropriately, their thread of music feels like it's cut from a more malleable element than just 'rock'. "What we make will always be in progress, and the integration of our music into the collective conscience is a conversation that happens simultaneously along with its disintegration," says Farquarson. "We'll always be amateurs. Anyone who says they're a professional is merely practiced at the art of pretense," says Furjwürd.

After a few train stops through Europe together, collecting instruments, records, films, and books, the fast friends embarked on a maiden journey to the U.S. in 2018, where they are still awaiting proper documentation to remain. "It's silly to consider yourself a citizen anywhere, really, when you can just stamp your feet and clap your hands and declare yourself a part of the earth... though I suppose it's easier for us to blend in here. Most people in the States don't seem to be scared of light-skinned folks with funny accents" quips Furjwürd. After brief stints in New York, Nashville, Asheville, Austin, and Los Angeles, the ambitious young craftsmen landed in a house in remote Sonoma County through the connections of a family friend. This is where they simultaneously wrote and performed the composite of their self-titled debut release, which is 7 minutes of intersecting nirvana, delirium, chaos, and lucid musing that has striking moments but most notably a surprising lack of pretense. It was enough to spur the folks of new San Francisco label Orphan (founded by Tyson Vogel of Two Gallants) to make it their official unofficial first release - Released on limited edition cassette tape October 19, 2018.
