Bad-ass dark new wave from Oakland featuring Noah Landis of Neurosis and Christ on Parade.
Trough
Trough
Formed in 2016, Oakland, California's Trough is a band of scavengers that scrounge from the margins of punk and experimental rock music to assemble a rag-and-bone shop of sonic material that is both accessible and unfamiliar. With roots in 90's noise rock and 80's post-punk, Trough extends its wiry arms to garner an assortment of parts salvaged from different musical fields: the exterminating, cacophanous horns of free-jazz; the dismal, comfortless atmosphere of death-rock; and, occassionally, the explosive burst of speed from D-beat and hardcore.

Composed of Andrew Lopez (guitar, piano), Daniel Harlan (drums), Evan Clayburn (bass), and Matt Sampaio-Hackney on vocals, the band has been writing new songs to explore and extend the trademark sound demonstrated on their December 2017 debut LP, Human-Human. French noise-rock publication Perte et Fracas said of the Bob Weston mastered record: "An experimental noise and punk music on the edges. Post-punk with scathing and melodic riffs. No-wave influences seeking confrontation and dissonance...Finely original and flamboyant." Clocking in at just over thirty minutes, the record is a concise statement of aims: Trough is a band that wants to kick the listener's ass. Vomited forth on a stream of pummeling, nervous-octopus drumming, the guitar is brutalized on a sequence of pungent jazz chords, while the basslines snake around the melody and the vocals moan, howl, sob, and persecute the listener. From the unapologetic rough-housing of "Chode to Joy" to the intense and unclassifiable "Fetish Face," Trough marks a singular territory for itself as a must-see contemporary rock band.

The new songs from their in-process sophomore release are both more aggressive and catchier than before, sounding at times like Rudimentary Peni's more tuneful moments, and at others like The Jesus Lizard falling down a staircase. Having incorporated a new bass player in Alex Lord, Trough plans to strop their razor with a set of shows showcasing both old and new material.
