The Dans of Steel
The Dans of Steel
The Dans of SteelIt’s often said that it takes a village to raise a child. It also takes a village to raise the music artistry to extreme heights we may never see again in the American rock music scene.

That’s why four deeply soulful artists and musicians in the East Bay came together: in admiration of the detailed craftings and artistic splendor of Steely Dan.

The Dans of Steel — Waddell Bell, Ronnie Smith, Malcolm Marshall and Raliegh Neal — explore, “funkafy” and give Steely Dan covers a “soulicious” East Bay vibe. As experienced working musicians, they look to the actual session players who enrich each album Steely Dan has produced.

The Dans, all of them fathers (and at times Men of Steel in their everyday lives), enjoy heated conversations and long listening sessions together. They often go deep into the large list of supporting musicians who contribute to Steely Dan, including the individual guitarists, bassists, drummers, pianists, horn players and vocalists.

The Dans of Steel aim to go beyond just Donald Fagen and Walter Becker, Steely Dan’s two masterminds. The often-unsung session musicians, whose skills in many ways are equally as important as Fagen and Becker, created the groves, riffs, vibes and arrangements that still thrill us today.

The music and compositions of the support musicians can be related back to the Steely Dan discography. In turn, we begin to see how truly prolific this music was and still is.

Matt is a young singer/songwriter from San Francisco. Cutting his teeth on countless open mics around the Bay Area, Matt started taking music (a little bit) more seriously when Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads offered to produce his first record.

Since then, Matt has continued to churn out more songs than he can remember the words to, opening for the likes of Mavis Staples, Jackie Greene and Blues Traveler and collaborate with the likes of Chuck Prophet and Tom Higgenson of the Plain White T's.

With his band, Matt has played stages across the country, including The Fillmore, The Troubadour, and Irving Plaza.
